Business is one of the fastest growing areas for journalism. The demand for graduates trained in business writing is expected to far outstrip supply over the next decade. The reason for the growth is the increased specialization of media.
Studies have shown that journalists who understand business command higher average starting salaries and have greater employment opportunities upon graduation.
The JSchool offers two business journalism classes -- J492 Reporting Business offered Winter Quarter, and J492 Economics Reporting offered during Spring Quarter. Both are taught by E.W. Scripps Visiting Professional Mark Tatge. The courses don't need to be taken in sequence.
The Business Reporting class focuses on how to report and write about businesses and markets. The companion Economics Reporting Course studies how to report on the economy, the Federal Reserve, money, interest rates and banking. Junior or Senior standing is required for both courses. The aim of both courses is to increase student journalists' business literacy.
The courses are taught assuming the students do not have a business education. But a general knowledge of business or economics will prove helpful in completing the classes. Students of all sequences at Scripps are encouraged to take the courses. See Mark Tatge in Scripps 103 for details.
