The School of Journalism joined a number of groups on campus in hosting Sara Ganim, the reporter who broke the story about Penn State and Jerry Sandusky. [note: Ganim won a Pulitzer Prize today for her reporting]

Welcome back, Posties!

This weekend, The Post is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and to that we say hurrah! And we welcome back to campus the legions of Post alumni.
The JSchool will host a modest reception on Saturday, April 14 (11-12:30 p.m.) in Scripps Hall, just to make sure our alumni can come back and see the building. But because The Post is an independent newspaper, the main event happens everywhere BUT Scripps Hall. As it should be.

Words and pictures that matter

This year’s Schuneman Symposium is about what matters most to us: Making an impact. The central question we will examine is, how are social movements changed by the coverage they receive, through pictures and words?
It all starts with the 3:10 p.m. (Baker Center Theater) showing of “One Thousand Pictures: RFK’s Last Journey,” a film featuring the images of photographer Paul Fusco, a 1957 graduate of Ohio University. Fusco’s photographs document the New York-to-Washington train that carried the body of Robert Kennedy from funeral to burial. More important, Fusco captured the respect and sadness of thousands of Americans who stood vigil as the train somberly crept to its destination.

Read speaker bios at symposium schedule.Wednesday morning, Fusco’s pictures will be discussed beginning at 9:30 (Baker Center Theater) in a format that will feature a conversation between the photographer and long-time magazine designer Will Hopkins.

Fannin (BSJ ’77) speaks on Asian tech

The JSchool and several other campus organizations will be hosting Scripps graduate Rebecca Fannin, columnist for Forbes Magazine and author of the books Silicon Dragon and Startup Asia, at Ohio University’s Baker Theater Monday April 9, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Fannin has travelled all corners of Asia, from China to Indonesia to India, visiting various tech hotspots and meeting the most successful Asian entrepreneurs. Fannin is founder of Silicon Asia. She will speak and respond to questions about her international reporting/entrepreneurial experiences.

Reflecting on PRSSA trip to Chicago

Back in early March, 40+ students headed to Chicago to visit some of the big communication agencies in the Windy City, including Ogilvy, GolinHarris, Weber Shandwick, Ketchum, Burson Marsteller and more. They also hosted a networking dinner with some of the pros they met. The video above was sent to me and I thought others might enjoy watching it.

Statehouse News Bureau doubles, adds new media partners

I’m very happy to report that the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Statehouse News Bureau is going gangbusters. In case you missed it, winter quarter fellows Pat Holmes and Deanna Pan had major stories on the front of Sunday’s Columbus Dispatch (see the entire list of bureau stories).
For spring quarter we’ve been able to increase the size of the Statehouse News Bureau staff from two (in fall and winter quarters) to four, while also adding The Cleveland Plain Dealer and WBNS/ONN as media partners.

Russ Baird (1922-2012)

Professor emeritus Russ Baird passed away this past Thursday at the age of 89.
A few fortunate students who were editors of their high school newspapers have received the Baird scholarship, which took a healthy bite out of their tuition bill.
