Internships that Rock

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

Every student in the JSchool knows that one of their graduation requirements is completion of an internship. They also figure out that each internship offers an invaluable network of job contacts, not to mention the real-world work place experience that employers demand.

Students featured in these interviews have figured out how to make that real-world internship experience be with an organization that either is a house-hold name — be it The Today Show, Billboard, or the Associated Press — or a global experience that broadens the students’ world view.

What can journalism freshmen do?

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

One of the great opportunities presented to journalism freshmen at Ohio University is the chance to get involved. Right away.

In the following story, JFreshmen Newsroom reporters Heather Bartman and Sienna Tomko talk with freshmen journalism student Lauren Martinez, who explains how her out-of-the-classroom experiences influence her sequence choice.

Shaplen to work with JFreshmen Newsroom

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

The man who was once news assistant to Walter Cronkite will be working with Ohio University first year journalism students taking part in the experimental “JFreshmen Newsroom.”

Freelance producer Peter Shaplen, along with JSchool Prof. Bob Stewart, will work with students in the special section of JOUR101. Students in the course will create online content about the topic of one of their first courses: “Journalism & Society.” Their target audience will be the 200-plus JSchool freshmen enrolled in the regular JOUR101, and anyone else interested in the changes going on in the media sector.

Alumni return to speak to freshmen

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

The freshmen class in the JSchool recently heard four alums speak about their careers. What they heard was simple: You are part of a tradition. Don’t blow it.

OK, their message was a little more nuanced, but in essence Cooper Jones (’00), Stephanie Busack (’05), Dan Farkas (’98) and Chelsea Hamilton (’06) told students in my J101 class that they have a responsibility to work hard, achieve and then give back. That’s the formula for making the JSchool a quality program.

WOUB News blog

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

Last year’s mentoring coordinator for WOUB News created a series of podcasts that introduce the hands-on broadcast news opportunities available through that operation. Check them out at woubnews.blogspot.com.

from his blog: “Ed Zelaski, the mentoring coordinator at WOUB. These podcasts are here to serve as a training aid to the new student staffers at the station. Feel free to contact me with any questions at ez327206@ohio.edu.”

How to get involved

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

For the returning student the new year starts with some familiarity. Indeed, returning to campus may even feel like returning home.

But for freshmen, the sense of choice and opportunity can seem overwhelming. I was reminded of this during Welcome Saturday, held just before the beginning of the fall quarter. One new student already asked for instructions on how to drop a class so that she would have more time for getting involved in one or more student organization.

Come to OU and create media

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

In this blog post I want to call attention to how incoming students can get hands-on experience from the “get go.”

In case you haven’t noticed, the very top line of the JSchool website is a list of links to student-produced media. This past year I got to add several new publications to the list, requiring me to shrink the font size down to an almost unreadable size. Here’s an easy-to-read version of the list, with a brief description of each outlet:

Freshmen profiles: J101 on J101

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

Last Friday, students in the JFreshmen Newsroom section of JOUR101 produced video profiles of a number of freshmen journalism students. The goal: find out what kind of hands-on journalism activities our students are involved in right from the get-go.

Here are the profiles, arranged as a youtube playlist:
