Grad students learn value of personal brand

by Michael Sweeney, Professor; Associate Director for Graduate Studies

Branding isn’t for just for companies anymore. In today’s job market, creating a personal brand can be a key asset that sets you apart from the competition.

On April 27, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism hosted “Building Brand ‘You,’” a graduate student seminar about creating a personal brand. The seminar featured keynote speaker Pete Costanzo, Jr., co-founder of Cincinnati-based Marsh Brand Partners. Costanzo, a branding expert with more than 20 years of experience, shared the steps to create an “authentic, simple and consistent” personal brand that would give graduate students a strategic advantage as a job applicant.

Costanzo revealed key elements of managing a personal brand in numerous areas including networking, social media, resume design, and the interview process.

“There was a lot of good information and it definitely gave me some points to chew on as I enter the next stage of my life,” said master’s student Kerry Kubilius.
