JSchool’s faculty, students thrive at AEJMC 2011

Our school’s faculty, graduate and undergraduate students were recognized for their research and journalistic work at the recently concluded Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) meeting in St. Louis, Missouri.
Professors Yusuf Kalyango (Ohio), Peddiboyina Vijayalakshmi (India), Syed Ashraf (Pakistan), Hans Meyer (Ohio), and Bob Stewart (Ohio), standing in front of Vijayalakshmi’s poster about her research on Indian teens’ use of social media.
Professor Michael Sweeney, the JSchool’s graduate director, wrote in a recent blog post about our graduate students who presented at the conference. In addition to the graduate students, several faculty presented their research on topics ranging from citizen journalists to libel issues surrounding the Civil Rights movement. Two undergraduates, Yang Chu and Alexandra Stuckey, were recognized for their international reporting.

Scholars convene at AEJMC in Denver

Back in May, grad director Mike Sweeney wrote a blog post about the faculty and grad students who were headed to AEJMC in Denver to present their research.
We’re all safely back from Denver now, and I’m happy to say that OU, the Scripps College, and the JSchool in particular, showed up in impressive form. In addition to the participants noted in Mike’s blog, I was struck by the number of alums from our program who not only attend but present their research. In addition to all of those folks I’ve been privileged to meet and know in the past 20+ years, former director Ralph Izard pointed out a number of key individuals in the AEJMC organization who got their doctorates from the JSchool before my arrival in 1987. Made me very proud.

Some Thoughts on My Intellectual Journey

As we approach the end of our careers, we professors surely reflect on what we have done in the past 30 to 50 years or so. What major questions did we raise and emphasize in our teaching and research? What tentative (an omnipresent qualifier) answers, if any, did we come up with? And how did these things relate to our work as professional communicators as well as to our transformative studies in grad school and beyond?
I have decided to write down some thoughts along these lines in the document entitled “Some Reflections on a Modest Intellectual Journey: Mine.” Anyone can download this PDF file.

JSchool’s scholarship given top 10 designation by CIOS

A few weeks ago we received the following notice from the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship (CIOS). It’s taken us a little while, but we’ve finally figured out that it’s really good news!
Your department has been identified as a “Top Ten” department for research in one or more areas of disciplinary research focus. The CIOS’s ComVista/ComAnalytics system tracks article publication by faculty at more than 700 programs in the US and Canada, ranking them on the basis of research article productivity in the field’s journal literature. A “Top Ten” designation occurs for a department (1) with faculty who have collectively published a minimum of 3 articles on a tracked subject and (2) when the department’s collective record of publication places the department in the field’s top ten, allowing for tied ranks. Congratulations. We hope you’ll be able to make use of this distinction in support of your department’s mission.
