JSchool, The Post show up big at ONA

by Robert Stewart, Director; Professor

This year’s Ohio Newspaper Association provided JSchool faculty and students the chance to engage with newspaper editors and publishers from across the state.

2012 was our year to staff ONA’s “newsroom.”

The team, which included Stephanie Gort, Brandon Carte, Sara Jerde, Brooke Bunce, Jim Ryan, and Viscom student Erin Corneliussen, provided coverage of Vice President Joe Biden’s remarks, the remarks of Jack Hanna from the Columbus Zoo, as well as all of the other presenters at the convention [see PDF of coverage].

Scripps Howard Visiting Professional Andy Alexander moderated a panel on editorials. Faculty members Bill Reader, Aimee Edmondson, and Hans Meyer joined me as the other faculty members attending the convention.

Congratulations are in order for The Post, which was recognized in the Ohio Collegiate Newspaper and Web Site Competition in the following categories:

>> First Place for News Coverage and Sports Coverage

>> Second Place for Arts and Entertainment and for Design

>> Third Place for Editorial Writing and for Headline Writing

From Wes Lowery, editor of The Post:

It’s a huge honor to be recognized by ONA — specifically for our news and sports coverage, which are two points of pride for us at The Post. Ohio is a state with multiple professional-quality college newspapers, so ranking near the top is a huge honor. These awards are a testament
to the hard work and dedication of last year’s staff, with much credit due to former editor-in-chief Joe Ragazzo. Now, it’s my job to continue the strong year my staff is having and hopefully bring home even more ONA honors from next year’s convention.
