50th Anniversary of LBJ speech on campus remembered

by Robert Stewart, Ph.D., Director; Professor

On May 7, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson came to speak on the Athens campus as part of his War on Poverty campaign. JSchool alumnus Sid Davis (BSJ ’52) came along to cover it for Westinghouse Broadcasting Company.

Barely a dozen years out of school, Davis already had covered the assassination of JFK in Dallas, serving as one of three pool reporters on Air Force One when Johnson was sworn into office.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of LBJ’s visit to Athens, Davis will return to speak about that day, as well as to share his experience of covering nine U.S. presidents with faculty and students.

Davis will speak Thursday evening at the Baker Center Theater during the 6-8 pm opening program for the LBJ conference. On Friday he will speak with students and faculty at 10:30 in the lobby of Schoonover Center. The events are free and open to the public.
