PhD student Nick Hirshon to give paper on 1969 Mets

by Michael Sweeney, Professor; Associate Director for Graduate Studies

Nicholas Hirshon, a PhD student in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, has had a paper accepted for presentation at the 2015 Joint Journalism and Communication History Conference in New York City.

Hirshon’s paper is “One More Miracle:
John ‘Mets’ Lindsay and the Race for Mayor of New York City.” It examines how a mayoral candidate attempted to tie his media image to the scrappy, underdog major-league baseball team that had been perpetual losers before becoming world champions in the 1969 season.

The conference will be March 21 at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, New York University.

Hirshon’s historical research has focused on the public image of professional sports.
