Associate designer needed at High Country News
High Country News, a nonprofit biweekly magazine covering environmental, public-lands and community issues in the American West, has an immediate opening for a creative, quick and careful designer to join the team in Paonia, Colo. We’re looking for someone who will excel at the job’s many responsibilities and contribute as HCN explores new possibilities in print, on the Web and on other platforms.
Our ideal person knows and loves High Country News, is organized and will strive for excellence in all aspects of the job. Position is available immediately and is full-time with great benefits in lovely, rural western Colorado.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidate has an interest in Western environmental news and using design to enhance and better tell those stories. S/he can successfully work with editors and art director to plan and execute presentation of stories in the magazine and on the website.
Must have high-level InDesign and Photoshop skills and ability to convert InDesign, PDF or Word files to ascii text, resize and optimize images and issue for Web, and ability to upload those text files and images to the site using the content-management system. (We use Plone; familiarity with Drupal, Joomla, or Wordpress or a similar CMS would suffice.) Familiarity with HTML required, an understanding of CSS and Javascript a plus.
Additional familiarity with Illustrator, mapping software for print and web, Flash, Ajax and other multimedia production tools including video and audio, or a desire to learn such skills, will allow you to take on new and increasingly complex projects for the Web
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include finding great art, designing pages and producing maps and data visualizations for magazine and Web, processing copy during the production cycle and performing post-production tasks (such as compiling issue pay sheet and cleaning up files) and converting and optimizing text and graphics for the Web, as well as uploading issue. Additional tasks include ad design for the magazine and the Web and handling production and design of HCN?promotional materials, working with various departments and with printers.
