Journalism alumni back in Athens for Homecoming should drop by Scripps Hall immediately after the parade to meet up with former (and new!) professors, classmates, staff and JSchool Ambassadors.

Former director Ralph Izard is back in town and plans to attend, which probably will be a highlight for many alums from the "Riz" generation. Many Posties will remember fondly Ralph's work as adviser to The Post.

And don't be surprised if a JSchool Ambassador pulls you aside to be interviewed for our YouTube channel! We recently surpassed 41,000 views, with nearly 300 videos posted.

Speaking of interviews, here's a recent one I did with Kyle Kondik, who has worked in journalism as well as in media relations.

Widow of first African American graduate of the JSchool interviewed by WOUB. Discusses life in Southest Ohio, as well as her husband's experiences as a journalist.

I just stumbled onto this terrific WOUB interview of Ada Woodson Adams, co-author of the recently released book, "A Significant Presence: A Pictorial Glimpse of the Black Experience in Athens County, Ohio."

Adams, a graduate of Ohio University's School of Education, was married to the late Alvin C. Adams (BSJ '59), the first black graduate of the School of Journalism. In this Studio B interview, Adams talks about growing up in Southeast Ohio, her husband's experience as a journalism student here in Athens as well as his early years as a journalist.

NOTE: The following information is from the website for Adams Hall, named in honor of Alvin Adams:

"In 1959, Adams became the first African-American graduate of the Ohio University School of Journalism. He went on to a career that included working for the nation's first black daily newspaper, the Chicago Daily Defender, and covering Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and Malcolm X's assassination for Jet magazine. An Athens County native, Adams and his wife, Ada, co-founded the Multicultural Genealogical Center in Chesterhill, Ohio. Alvin Adams died in 2004."

Rosenweig (BSJ '71) reflects on 9/11 coverage

JSchool alum Marc Rosenweig's recent column takes a look at how three journalists covered 9/11.

Rosenweig, a communication professor at Montclair State University in New Jersey, writes that "One [journalist] was nearly buried as one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center fell, another was over the scene in a traffic helicopter, and the third was running a New York television newsroom."

There will be lots of coverage of 9/11 events associated with the upcoming 10th anniversary of that day. Rosenweig provides keen insights into the lives of journalists who covered the story.

Hitchens (BSJ '81) receives alum award during reunion for The Post

When a group of Posties who graduated in the late 1970s and early '80s gather in Athens, they meet at the Union.

That's where I first met Theresa Hitchens, who was voted alum of the year a couple years ago but had yet to pick up the ward. That's because she lives in Switzerland, where she directs the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research.

I was sitting with a half dozen alums from The Post when a whirlwind of a woman blew into the Union. Someone said, "here's our Geneva connection." Realizing that we don't have many alumni in Geneva, Switzerland, I quickly figured out that this was THE Theresa Hitchens, with whom I'd only had email contact when we tried to schedule her trip to receive the Horton award.

Sure enough, it was Theresa, who was in town to join about 20 other alumni who had thoroughly bonded some thirty years ago while working at The Post. I suggested that we present her award to her in front of her former classmates and colleagues from The Post, which was entirely agreeable to her. We agreed that the following day's pool-side get together at the OU Inn would be the suitable event for the presentation.

NYC business journalism trip opens doors to major media companies

This past week, JSchool students visiting New York met with business journalists at Bloomberg, the New York Times, Fox Business News, CNBC, and the Dow Jones Newswire/Wall Street Journal. And just for kicks they spent Friday afternoon on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

The "Journalism on Wall Street" trip, also available for course credit, was organized with the help of alumnus Marc Rosenweig (BSJ '71), one of the creators of CNBC.

Seven JSchool undergrads traveled to New York -- some by plane and some by Megabus. Rosenweig, who now teaches at Montclair State University in New Jersey, accompanied the students and me on several of the visits.

Alumnus Nick Baker arranged the Bloomberg visit; CNBC and Fox Business News visits were arranged by Rosenweig; the New York Times visit was made possible by alumna Meghan Louttit; and Dow Jones Newswire/Wall Street Journal doors were opend by alumni Mike Ramsey and Min Zeng, both reporters for the WSJ. Rosenweig also helped set up the NYSE visit, which included time on the floor talking to traders (thanks Frank Masiello!) about how they work.

At the conclusion of the week we had a social at the Life Cafe* on E. 10th Street and Avenue B in Manhattan. Ten of our alumni joined us for the evening. The alums represented a diverse set of professional backgrounds:

Ellie Behling (emediavitals.com)
Chris D'Amico (Burson-Marsteller)
Maria Gallucci (solveclimatenews.com)
Pat Henderson (NY 1 News)
Eric Hornbeck (Law360 Newswire)
Megan Leonhardt (Law360 Newswire)
Jill Mapes (Billboard)
Larry Neumeister (Associated Press)
Marc Rosenweig (Montclair State University)
Brian Xe (Bloomberg)

All in all it was a wonderful trip. Students made great contacts with alumni as well as business journalists. NYC-based alumni met other alums who are making it in the Big Apple. I got to do interviews with three of them (Tara Zimmerman at WABC, Eric Hornsbeck at Law360 and Ellie Behling at emdiavitals.com), to be posted in the coming days. Stay tuned.

*Life Cafe is where the musical "Rent" was written. Scenes from the motion picture version were shot in the cafe. Special note: the location was three blocks from where I lived (East 7th St. and Ave B) in New York City when I studied at Hunter College.

This past week our Society of Alumni and Friends was named "Outstanding Society of the Year" among the 28 alumni societies here at Ohio University.

The society previously received awards for "Most Innovative Program" (for Senior Saturday in 2009) and a Philanthropic Award in 2010 for starting a scholarship. Last week's recognition came at the OUAA's Alumni Leadership Conference.

From Stephanie Pavol, president of SAF:

"A big thank you and congrats to all of the board members and our J-School friends for your hard work and support this year. It has been noticed and appreciated. Apparently, we'll now have a permanent plaque in Konnecker Alumni Center..."

And a big thank you to Stephanie for her leadership this year!

I recently returned from Washington DC, where I interviewed eight JSchool alums. Today I’m featuring the second of those eight, Andy Alexander (BSJ 715), ombudsman for the Washington Post.

I've known Andy for many years, and had heard several legendary tales about his time as a student. I was determined to track him down on my recent trip to DC to ask him about some of these stories. What I learned about his experiences while a student at OU was far more compelling than even the legends. In the first video, Andy explains why he didn't spend as much time in the classroom as he should have (hint: The Post). He also describes his three international "internship" experiences, starting with the summer between his first and second year.

In this video, Andy describes his long-standing commitment to diversity in media.

In this final video, Alexander discusses his commitment to giving back to Ohio University.

Garrett Downing graduated from the JSchool this past June. He already had landed a position with WEWS in Cleveland. I recently received this email, which he has given me permission to republish.

A recent photo [added 9/14/10] of Garrett on set during a WEWS sports program.

Life in Cleveland for me is going well.... I've adjusted to the early hours (even though it still takes about three cups of coffee to wake up) and I'm getting the chance to do a number of different things.

My first month on the job, I was in the middle of our team's coverage on the LeBron James fiasco. It was a great way to get thrown to the wolves, and we ended up setting all kinds of traffic records for our site with that coverage. It was great to have a hand in that, and some of my work ended up getting picked up nationally. I couldn't believe it when I went on yahoo.com and my byline was the main story on the site!

Recently, I've been covering the Browns training camp and pre-season, and the plan is for me to continue covering the team for the website throughout the season. I definitely did not think I would be covering the NFL two months into my first job. Here's an article I wrote for our site.

Also, I am going to have a big role in high school football. I'm basically in charge of the web product for our high school football coverage, and I'm building relationships with local schools to have them send us video to put on our TV broadcasts, and online. As part of the high school coverage, I'm also going to get some on-air opportunities. If things go according to plan, then I should be making my Cleveland TV debut this weekend!

Email update from Chelsea Toy (BSJ ’10)

I just received the following "report" from our top graduating senior, Chelsea Toy. She gave me permission to share it with you.

Life is great at Horse & Rider, and I’ve just finished my first big feature for our September issue.

In the month that I’ve been here, I’ve been given three departments to manage and at least one feature a month, plus I’m responsible for updating our Facebook with engaging posts 3-4 times every day. One of those departments is Western fashion, which is probably my favorite thing in the world next to barrel horses, so I couldn’t be more thrilled about that. On top of that, the managing editor and I get to go to horse shows and rodeos throughout the week if we see fit and shoot video and photos. We’ve never had staff videos before, so when I posted our first last week, it was a point of celebration for our staff. There will be many more to come, that’s for sure.

Just as I arrived last month, our company (Active Interest Media) launched a contest to see which group (the equine group, the healthy-living group, the outdoors group, etc.) could develop the most innovative iPad application. The group publisher selected one magazine within the equine group to write, design, and launch the prototype. Horse&Rider was picked, and so our three-person editorial staff is coming up with an iPad app for this contest. It’s a HUGE learning curve, but it’s really going to be something to put on the resume, and something that’s probably going to make the way we do web even better, too.

With our company also owning lots of related publications, our group publisher asked me this week to help him expand the barrel racing coverage on one of our sister magazines, Spin To Win Rodeo. This is going to be great, as Spin To Win is pretty much the top roping/rodeo magazine in the industry, and I used this magazine for part of my market review in my HTC scholarly essay that accompanied my professional project. (And that was just one year ago that Cary Frith and I were putting that analysis together... Funny how things change in a year.)

I found out I got the assistant editor job with Horse & Rider on Wednesday, April 21. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. Phone call #1 went to Mom and Dad, of course, who were thrilled that I wouldn’t be living in their garage attic. Phone call #2, though, went to my horse trainer, Ginny. She’s been my mentor, my best friend, and my biggest (and sometimes, most critical) fan since I was 9-years-old with my terrible bucking little pony named Boogie. She couldn’t get over the fact that I’d be living our dream of going to out West (Boulder, Colo.) and taking my horses with me, not to mention I’d have access to industry professionals that we’d only dreamed of talking to just a day earlier.

The first week in May, I went home to say my “see-ya-laters” (goodbyes are way too permanent sounding) to my family and friends in Apollo and Vandergrift, Pa. Ginny’s was my first stop after saying ‘hi’ to Mom and Dad. Proudly, she brought out my graduation present from her bedroom (a silver bracelet with “Live the Life You Love” carved into it). She went back into her bedroom, though, just a moment later, and brought out a tattered magazine covered in dust. It’s cover read Horse&Rider, and it was dated April 1971. Slowly, she opened the delicate pages to a section titled Miss Western Life, and there, on a two-page spread, was an 18-year-old Ginny, in her Appaloosa National Horsemanship Queen crown, aboard her old show horse. Somehow she had been chosen by Horse&Rider as Miss Western Life some 39 years ago.

When I left home, Ginny and I both shed some tears, but I just kept thinking about how she’s taken me full circle, honing my riding and horsemanship skills to such a fine point that I could get a job with the same magazine that recognized her decades ago for the exact same thing.
