VNAA -- Web Content / Communications Specialist

Web Content / Communications Specialist

Visiting Nurse Associations of America

You will report directly to the VP of Communications and Development. With a total staff of just 20, we’re not the largest, the best funded, or the most well-known advocacy group in Washington. We are, however, a place where your work can make a profound difference; a place where your communication skills will be valued, nurtured, and allowed to flourish.

As the Web Content and Communications Specialist, you will have your hand in almost every communication to our members, sponsors, staff and the public. Your role is central to getting our message out, connecting with our current members, attracting new members, and gaining the support of the public. We will look to you to redesign our Web site while providing a consistent clear recognition of VNAA and its mission.

Expectations for your First Year

The following are the primary areas of focus during your first year as the Web Content and Communications Specialist:

Interview staff, members and sponsors to understand their needs and how they currently use our Web site. Study other organizations and research best practices in Web site design and functionality. Develop new functionality and ideas for how the Web site can best support and advance the mission of VNAA and provide practical, useful information to policymakers and the general public.

Collaborate with each department to develop fresh content for the Web site, edit material for the newsletters, write press releases and develop other external communications as needed. Improve the Web site and other communication vehicles to best support member service and organizational objectives.

Review Web site content for relevance and timeliness, identifying and updating out-of-date information. Perform quality checks to eliminate typos, broken links, functionality errors, and poor interface. Research ways to build web traffic, and generate repeat usage.

Contribute to the communications strategy for each department. Your input on messaging and communications strategy will be vital in helping them meet their departmental objectives.

What’s Attractive to the Right Candidate?

Our members are a national treasure that most people have never heard of; working with our members is one of the best parts of the job.

Our work is vital to improving the quality of life of millions of American families, and your work is vital to communicating our mission. You will be at the center of our communications strategy and viewed as an essential and valued member of the association - contributing to the success of every department.

You can spread your wings here. Our Web site is due for a redesign and fresh look and you will take the lead in this endeavor.

We are a collaborative team full of thoughtful, bright, future-focused professionals. You won’t have to clamor for attention, we already know that your finely honed communications skills are integral to our success.

Working here, there are few obstacles to get things done - we have a powerful bias toward action. If you have a better way of doing something you can usually get the approval just by walking down the hall and talking to someone. We don’t have a crushing bureaucracy and we don’t debate things to death, there is simply too much important work to do. You’ll hear “Good idea. Run with it” far more than you’ll hear “We haven’t decided that yet.”

We offer a competitive benefits package and compensation package and have a great downtown location at 900 19th St, NW, near Farragut North (Red Line) and Farragut West (Blue and Orange Lines) Metro stations.

Responsibilities

As the Web Content and Communications Specialist, you will:

Oversee the operations, maintenance, and development of the Web site.

Coordinate program design, HTML coding, testing, debugging, and documentation of the Web site with technology vendor(s).

Collaborate with MIS consultants to review information systems and assist in development of improved systems to enhance efficiency in operations. Assist MIS consultants in maintaining connection, intranet, e-mail, and firewall security.

Coordinate support for IT Systems. Provide basic on-site help for minor IT issues with the support of our IT support vendor mindSHIFT.

Oversee print material by working with vendors, performing light editing and developing content. Preserve the integrity of VNAA branding and messaging.

Format, review and edit content for posting on the VNAA Web site.

Work with staff to revise, edit and post the VNAA newsletter, “Member Update,” generating content as needed.

Train select staff to properly format content and post to the Web site.

Monitor budget for Web site development and enhancements.

Review and refresh content information to assure it is current and inclusive of all VNAA activities.

Respond to member questions and orient members regarding Web site usage.

Provide support to the Vice President of Communications and Development in drafting content for external communications content, including press releases.

Experience, Skills and Attributes of the Successful Candidate

The successful Web Content and Communications Specialist will demonstrate the following experience, skills and attributes:

Experience:
