<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><i>Ohio Today</i>, Ohio University?s alumni magazine, is searching for talented photographers to submit their work for the upcoming fall/winter issue. </p>

<i>Ohio Today</i> has a circulation of around 160,000, which includes alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Ohio University. Any student interested in the contest may enter, regardless of college or major.</p>

<p>
Prizes: $300 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>University Advancement is offering students the opportunity to be an integral part of the University Advancement team by serving as student assistants to the director of special projects. Students will work with the director and provide communications support to the vice president of University Advancement/CEO and President of the Ohio University Foundation, as well as the offices of Development and Alumni Relations (both under the division of University Advancement).   Position can be for the academic year or a quarterly commitment.  Hours are flexible, dependent on need for credit and current Advancement projects (4-20 hours per week possible).  Position will be open until filled.</p>

<p>
Position Description: </p>

<p>
The Special Projects Assistant will have the opportunity to participate and gain experience in a variety of communications functions. Responsibilities will include helping to research, develop and compose: press releases, correspondence for the vice president of university advancement and other senior level administrators, promotional brochures, newsletters and other communications for Foundation trustees and other distinguished audiences -- and other documents, including the university alumni publication "Ohio Today," web features and others of the university’s most visible external publications.  The student also will serve as a liaison for the director in work with various university and community officials. Outstanding writing and interpersonal communications skills and attention to detail are required. Computer skills are required for word processing and desktop publishing. </p>

<p>
The special projects assistant will work primarily in McGuffey Hall on the College Green. While the student will work primarily with the director, he or she also will be in direct contact with many members of the university at large and the university advancement staff, including individuals who work with distinguished alumni, the media, publications design, writing, multimedia production and printing. This contact will provide the student with valuable exposure to a variety of communications professionals.  This is a non-paid position, but academic credit is possible.</p>

University Advancement is one of Ohio University’s key university relations offices, comprised of several units.  The Office of Development manages university fund-raising activities and supports activities of University Alumni Relations, connects students and alumni through chapters, societies, reunions and other special programs. The Foundation is the institutionally-related, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, and is the repository for all private gifts to Ohio University through annual giving programs, capital and special campaigns, and planned or deferred gifts such as bequests and trusts.</p>

<p>
The Advancement communications office is an integral part of the life of the university through its role in helping to: -- secure major gifts to support academic initiatives and special programs -- manage major university events such as Homecoming Weekend -- participate in the planning of highly visible communications such as the university Web site. </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The OPIE Writing Lab is a new project this fall.  The students involved will be from the advanced ESL classes.  The students usually need extra help with their writing in order to be able to advance to the part-time or full-time academic level.  OPIE is looking for tutors who have decent writing skills and solid ideas about what makes a piece of writing good or weak. These tutors must also work well in an ESL setting.  The tutors will be able to work up to 8-10 hours a week, guaranteed 5 hours, with a starting pay of $9.00 an hour (undergraduates) with a raise of $0.50 after working 3 consecutive quarters. Graduate pay would start at $10.00 an hour with also a raise of $0.50 after working 3 consecutive quarters. The training time will also be paid.  The tutors will work 30 minute increments in Gordy Hall with hours set from 6-8:00 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday with longer hours on Wednesdays (10 a.m.-5:00 p.m.). During 2009-2010, the Ohio University Alumni Association is celebrating its 150th anniversary.  They are looking for a multimedia journalist to conceive and produce a series of short audio and video documentaries that capture memories, history and tradition from alumni who visit campus or attend events in the region. These pieces, in the NPR “Story Corps” format, would be used as an archival document for the 150th, but would be used during the year at events, and placed on the web.  This is a special opportunity for a creative student, well versed in all media, and comfortable interviewing and getting the best responses from a passionate alumni base.  Much of the work will focus around Homecoming week, October 12-18, with conceptual work and planning taking place earlier in the quarter.  Primary contact will be Graham Stewart, Assistant Vice President for alumni relations.</p>

<b>Regional Programming Intern</b> </p>

<p>
The Ohio University Alumni Association’s regional programming intern primarily supports regional programming through writing and editing for marketing outlets such as online calendars, web sites, and some print publications.  This support is for various off campus chapters (regional representations of alumni), Homecoming, and various off campus alumni events.  Secondary responsibilities will be event planning and organization of chapter events and OUAA events.  This position offers the student significant opportunities to build networking contacts, explore several career paths in special event planning, alumni relations and university advancement while developing immediate job skills.</p>

<p>
Position Description: The Ohio University Alumni Association (OUAA) firmly believes that the regional programming intern will aid the OUAA staff in furthering the goals and objectives of Vision Ohio, University Advancement and the OUAA strategic plan by supporting the assistant director of regional programming in effectively communicating with and programming for its diverse group of alumni and friends. Duties include creating appropriate content for web marketing of particular events for chapters, OUAA events as well as creating content for chapter websites to ensure maximum marketing while also assisting with planning and execution of special events, generating publicity and facilitating alumni communication.  Other duties as assigned may include managing communication, external mailings, and compiling newsletter information.  This position will be housed at Konneker Alumni Center in the office of the Assistant Director of Regional Programming.  </p>

<p>
The student is required to perform both independently and collaboratively on tasks with significant impact on the success of the OUAA. The student is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, tact, and strong written and verbal communication skills. These skills will be utilized to enhance current and future alumni awareness of services, programs and events of the OUAA which ultimately result in support for the institution.</p>

<p>
Benefits of the Position: The student will gain an understanding of potential career paths in alumni relations, university advancement and event planning, while acquiring respectable portfolio samples and interacting with alumni, fellow students, business and community leaders, and university officials. This position provides the student with the opportunity to work independently, creatively and participatively to obtain experience in self-management, responsible decision-making, teamwork, task follow-through, relationship building and professional-level job expectations. </p>

<p>
Qualifications: At least junior-class standing in a communications or consumer sciences major and a desire to pursue a career in marketing, communications, event planning, or alumni relations.  A background in interpersonal communication is required. Experience in organizational development, and public relations are a plus, though not required.</p>

<p>
Mentoring &amp; Evaluation: The regional programming intern will receive frequent, high-quality supervision and interaction with professional staff members to such an extent as to foster the acquisition of a general overview of and specific skills in a broad range of university careers, including jobs in alumni relations, university advancement and event planning. In turn, as a future alumnus, the student provides an invaluable link with and insight into the OUAA’s primary constituency: its alumni.</p>

<p>
The regional programming intern will be provided with ongoing informal feedback and a formal performance evaluation twice within the nine-week assignment period. The first formal evaluation will be conducted upon completion of four-week’s service and the final formal evaluation will be conducted as a form of "exit interview" upon completion of the ten-week assignment.</p>

Benefits of the Position: The student will gain an understanding of potential career paths in alumni relations, university advancement and event planning, while acquiring respectable portfolio samples and interacting with alumni, fellow students, business and community leaders, and university officials. This position provides the student with the opportunity to work independently, creatively and participatively to obtain experience in self-management, responsible decision-making, teamwork, task follow-through, relationship building and professional-level job expectations. The student will have frequent opportunities to contribute to special events and programming which have the potential to win nationally recognized awards through our professional organizations such as the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Council of Alumni Association Executives (CAAE).  Further, this position affords the student with significant opportunities to network externally with many of Ohio University’s 195,000-plus alumni who are professionally employed in a wide variety of career areas and environments that include corporations, nonprofit institutions, and service organizations, worldwide. This networking offers the student career exploration and job opportunity enhancement. </p>

Qualifications: At least junior-class standing in a business, communications or consumer sciences major and a desire to pursue a career in alumni relations, special events or meeting planning. A background in interpersonal communication is required. Experience in catering, meeting logistics, organizational development, and public relations are a plus, though not required.</p>

Mentoring &amp; Evaluation: The special events intern will receive frequent, high-quality supervision and interaction with professional staff members to such an extent as to foster the acquisition of a general overview of and specific skills in a broad range of university careers, including jobs in alumni relations, university advancement and event planning. In turn, as a future alumnus, the student provides an invaluable link with and insight into the OUAA’s primary constituency: its alumni.  The special events intern will be provided with ongoing informal feedback and a formal performance evaluation three times within the nine-month assignment period. The first formal evaluation will be conducted upon completion of three-week’s service, the second after the completion of the subsequent four weeks of service, and the third and final formal evaluation will be conducted as a form of "exit interview" upon completion of the ten-week assignment.</p>

He or she will work with its video and media professionals to shoot, edit, post, and create strong video content for delivery to the news media. The candidate will conceive, produce, and ready multimedia content that includes audio, video, and text for tape, DVD, and online delivery to internal and external entities.  The student will have opportunities to work with P2 technology, build up their demo reel, and the chance to have their work published.</p>

Qualifications: The applicant must be comfortable and persuasive in setting up on-camera interviews with University experts. The job requires proficiency in operating cameras, editing using Final Cut Pro software, and preparing and loading packages for online viewing and FTP delivery. The candidate will also field produce on the University’s satellite truck as needed.</p>

Responsibilities: UCM seeks a motivated student to fulfill the position. He/she will assist the online editor with review, preparation, and update of university news and information that will appear on the university's Web site. The student also will have the opportunity to use his/her journalistic skills of newsgathering, reporting, writing and editing in a professional setting. Under the guidance of the online editor, the student will have the opportunity to implement innovative electronic news distribution technologies using the university's Web site and other electronic media. Although the position's primary focus will be informational, there are no limits to what the student with the proper knowledge base and initiative will be able to add to the university's electronic news distribution and public relations efforts. Also, every effort will be made to incorporate the student's career goals, interests and background into the position.</p>
<p>
Benefits of the Position: The student will be able to augment existing knowledge of HTML, learn to use CommonSpot (the university's content management system), become increasingly familiar with the Macintosh and/or Windows computer platform(s) and gain invaluable knowledge of Web site design and new Web technologies. The student also will have the opportunity to put basic news writing and/or public relations skills learned in class to use in a professional setting. This position will be valuable to any student who plans to make journalism or the Internet part of their future career goals. He/she will gain knowledge of Web site creation and design, and will have his/her name attached to an award-winning Web site. This position will leave the student with the skills that would enable him/her to produce Web pages in a professional environment, a greater understanding of the practical applications of journalism and public relations (and the difference between the two), and skills that can be utilized in a research setting. He/she will be assigned stories by UCM writers and media specialists; interview faculty, staff, students and other sources; and write stories, news briefs, news releases, text to accompany videos and other assignments for publication and media outlets. The student works closely with UCM professionals to produce professional, well-written articles and news releases. The general writer compiles articles for publication on Outlook news Web site (www.ohio.edu/outlook) and other UCM venues as well as for distribution to the media.</p>
<p>
Benefits of the Position: This student will work in a mentoring situation with writers and editors and gain valuable journalism experience in a professional news setting. He or she has the opportunity to build a portfolio of writing samples from well-edited publications and widely circulated news releases to varied audiences. The student also has the opportunity to interact with top-level administrators, faculty members and others in the course of their interviews. This position helps prepare a student for positions in public relations and media settings by providing reporting, interviewing and writing experience as well as insight into the editorial decisions and production issues involved in producing publications. Student writers perform valuable writing and editing services for UCM and they offer the staff insights into student life at Ohio University and frequently are called on to suggest stories for publications.  Past UCM student writers have gone on to work for national magazines, leading newspapers, big-city PR agencies and top trade journals.</p>

Qualifications: Journalism majors -- in news editorial, PR or magazine sequences -- will have the best chance of landing this job. The successful candidate will have a basic knowledge of interviewing for and writing news and feature stories as well as a familiarity with Associated Press style. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Backdrop Magazine is currently accepting pitches for summer Web stories and fall magazine stories.</p>

<p>
Pitches should include a topic, focus and purpose, as well as whether or not it is intended as a Web, print feature or print department piece. Pitches that include potential sources as well as evidence of prior research will have a higher priority when it comes to selection. Students who don’t necessarily want to write can also pitch stories; all are welcome. Pitches are due June 2. Those selected will be notified within the week.</p>

For those who have taken Feature Writing and want a place to publish their work, feel free to pitch those pieces as well. If you’re looking for a clip and the story applies to Athens/OU, we’ll have a look.</p>
